In Barbara Bonard’s last year of the GreenMBA program at Dominican University of California, she was faced with the same question every graduate asks themselves: Will I find work that I love? Will I find my place in the world where can I apply all my education and skills? What is my higher purpose, and how will I recognize it when it is revealed to me? After being in school for eight years straight completing her BA in Strategic Management and knee deep in her final semester putting together her business plan for her Capstone project, a man from England came to talk at the college in October, 2011. This man was about to alter her life drastically.
The Founder, Aonghus Gordan, charismatically shared the work he had been doing for over 25 years at Ruskin Mill Trust, including stories of the lives of hundreds of children and young adults with special needs that had been transformed. In addition, the successful program that was dedicated to the soldiers that had returned from Afghanistan woke up every cell in her body! Barbara had found her higher purpose and life work and applied for the position in England, which would take her away from her close-knit family for four months. Bonardi stated, “It is going to be excruciating to leave my home and family, but I have to go. This is a once- in-a-lifetime opportunity. I need to learn what they are doing at RMT and bring it back home to the U.S.”
On January 13, 2012, her plane landed in the U.K., and although she misses her family terribly, technology has made it bearable to keep in touch through email and Skype. Barbara is currently living and taking root in Stroud, Gloucestershire, with another GreenMBA colleague, also named Barbara, on assignment with her. Together they are the Barbara’s and always get a chuckled from their fellow co-workers in the UK.
